Who Doesn't Like New Books?

Most of us do. They're interesting. They're stimulating. They look nice. They smell nice. O.K., I'm getting carried away now. But this is a library. In a university. Books seem so... natural.

And there are lots of them. Even in this digital age, there is still a flood of new titles being published at any given time, on any given subject. Some of them end up at the Patrick Power Library. They're here to support the teaching/researching/writing/inspiring/thinking being done at Saint Mary's.

There are a few easy ways of discovering exactly what new books the library has. The most comfortable (and highly recommended) way is to drop by our brand new reading area on the main floor (pictured). Enjoy the comfy seating, surrounded by bookcases housing our latest acquisitions (and a great collection of popular magazines and newspapers too). There's even a fireplace, to make it feel cosy and scholarly. Every few weeks, the books will be moved upstairs and a new batch will take their place.

If, for some bizarre (or understandable) reason, you can't make it to the library in person, you can still find out "what's new". You can browse a new web page listing of some of our new books. Just go HERE. Titles are grouped by subject and each one is a "clickable" link to its catalogue record (for call number, status, etc.). Of course, if you find something you'd like to read (and you will), you'll have to come here to get it...

We've got new books, old books, lots of "somewhere between new and old" books. Summer's coming. They look great on the beach.

Welcome to 2018!

We trust everyone had a happy and restful break. We sure did! Now we're back, refreshed, and ready to dive into 2018. We're hosting the Service Expo January 2nd and 3rd and the Societies and Partners Expo January 9th as part of Winter Welcome 2018. Other events happening on and around campus include a staff/student dodgeball game, an IKEA shopping trip, and movie and trivia night. Check it out here . Doug Vaisey Retiring

After 39 years of wonderful public service, Doug Vaisey will be retiring as head of the Library’s Reference Department next week.  Doug joined Saint Mary’s shortly after graduating from Dalhousie’s Library School.  It wasn’t long before he was helping plan the move to the newly constructed Patrick Power Library.  As the library grew, so did the Reference Department.  Under Doug’s leadership, it quickly developed its reputation for unparalleled reference service and dedication to the Saint Mary’s research community, a reputation it maintains to this day.  Doug didn’t just preach the importance of great service, he served as its model, whether helping a struggling student with their first paper or a graduate student with the most challenging research needs.
